A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
William Young
Cape Town Opera presents a dazzling evening of music, wit and romance with A Little Night Music, the celebrated work by Stephen Sondheim. Running from 30 June to 12 July 2026, this elegant production promises a luminous theatrical experience filled with longing, laughter and second chances.
Set in turn-of-the-century Sweden, A Little Night Music unfolds beneath a midsummer sky, where a tangled web of lovers—past, present and hopeful—navigate the complexities of the heart. Sophisticated, sensual and quietly devastating, the musical waltzes between comedy and melancholy, capturing the beauty and fragility of human connection. At its centre is one of Sondheim’s most ravishing scores, including the iconic song “Send in the Clowns,” a piece that has become synonymous with bittersweet reflection and timeless artistry.
This new staging features a distinguished cast, including William Young, who joins the ensemble in bringing Sondheim’s richly drawn characters to life with nuance and emotional depth.
Inside the Story
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in 20th-century musical theatre, Stephen Sondheim (1930–2021) reshaped the art form through works defined by intelligence, emotional complexity and musical innovation. From his early success as lyricist on West Side Story to a career spanning more than 16 full-length musicals, his legacy includes numerous accolades, among them an Academy Award, multiple Grammy and Olivier Awards, and the Pulitzer Prize.
A Little Night Music is inspired in part by the conventions of European farce, particularly the 18th-century French tradition that found popularity in Sweden. These influences are also reflected in Smiles of a Summer Night by Ingmar Bergman, which served as a key inspiration for Sondheim’s musical. Yet beyond its comedic framework, the true engine of the story lies in the emotional missteps of its characters—their longing, indecision and misplaced desires—rendered with remarkable elegance and insight.
The historical backdrop of the piece reflects a Sweden in transition. The 19th century saw sweeping social and economic changes, as a predominantly rural society gradually shifted toward urbanisation. Agricultural hardships and reform-driven change led many to seek new lives elsewhere, creating a sense of upheaval that quietly informs the world of the musical.
From Broadway to Cape Town
The original Broadway production of A Little Night Music featured an illustrious cast, including Len Cariou as Fredrik Egerman, Hermione Gingold as Madame Armfeldt, and Glynis Johns as Désirée Armfeldt. They were joined by a remarkable ensemble of performers who helped establish the show as one of Sondheim’s most enduring works.
Now, this beloved musical finds a new home on the Cape Town stage, where Cape Town Opera reimagines its timeless themes for contemporary audiences. With its blend of sparkling wit, aching romance and musical brilliance, A Little Night Music remains a masterful exploration of love in all its complicated, beautiful forms.
