TWELFTH NIGHT AT MAYNARDVILLE OPEN-AIR FESTIVAL

William Young

William Shakespeare’s, Twelfth Night, returns to the stage in a new outdoor production at the Maynardville Theatre, running from 30 January to 7 March 2026, under the direction of Steven Stead. This reimagining of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies blends classic text with the glamour of 1960s Italy, creating a theatrical experience that is both timeless and fresh.

Stead’s vision leans into the idea that Twelfth Night is a comedy born of discomfort. Characters desperately cling to the versions of themselves they wish to present — dignified, romantic, powerful — only to have those illusions unravel in delightfully awkward ways. In this glamorous Italian setting, where appearances matter above all else, the inevitable collapse of pretence becomes even funnier and more human.

The cast brings this world to life. Graham Hopkins revels in the pomposity and vulnerability of Malvolio, while Emily Child leads the story with as the quick-witted Viola. David Viviers lends musicality and insight to Feste, and Jock Kleynhans captures the lovesick grandeur of Orsino. As Olivia, Jenny Stead embodies elegance and emotional excess, beautifully matched by Michael Richard’s boisterous Sir Toby Belch and Aidan Scott’s delightfully foolish Sir Andrew Aguecheek.

Our talented, William Young can be seen in he role of Sebastian, whose performance anchors the play’s central theme of identity.

The ensemble is further strengthened by Ntlanhla Morgan Kutu as the steadfast Antonio, Natasha Sutherland as the sharp and scheming Maria, Lungile Lallie in the dual roles of Fabian and Valentine, and Paul Savage as the Sea Captain.

With an approximate running time of 90 minutes, this all-ages production offers an evening of revelry, romance, and laughter. Twelfth Night at this this years Maynardville Open-Air Festival  promises a joyful celebration of theatre, humanity, and a comedy that erupts when disguises finally fall away.
