LIEWE HEKSIE WORD GESCAM
Mia van der Merwe
A Delightful New Children’s Theatre Production Teaching Financial Awareness Through Story and Song
Beloved South African children’s character Liewe Heksie returns to the stage in a brand-new theatre production, Liewe Heksie Word Gescam, a charming and important story that introduces young audiences to the basics of money, saving, and financial safety.
After winning prize money in a talent competition, Liewe Heksie is encouraged by Karel Kat to take good care of her winnings. But big ideas like finances, interest, and budgets quickly make her head spin. A simple piggy bank doesn’t stay safe for long—especially with the mischievous Geelheks lurking nearby, eager to get her hands on the money. A bank account and card seem like a safer option… but for Liewe Heksie, remembering numbers and spotting danger isn’t exactly her strong suit.
As the story unfolds, young audience members are invited to help Liewe Heksie learn how to protect her money, recognise scammers, and make smart choices so that her prize money can grow instead of disappearing. Suitable for everyone aged three to one hundred and three, the production combines humour, music, and gentle lessons about financial responsibility in an accessible and entertaining way.
The production is written and directed by award-winning children’s and youth theatre creator Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck, with performances by Eldon van der Merwe and our very own, Mia van der Merwe.
Liewe Heksie Word Gescam is produced by Start The Conversation (STC), a registered Public Benefit Organisation in South Africa and a globally silver award–winning educational YouTube channel. The production forms part of STC’s Education Through Arts initiative, which uses theatre and digital education to empower audiences to make informed decisions and build long-term financial security.
This joyful yet meaningful production proves that even the trickiest topics—like money and scams—can be taught through imagination, laughter, and a little bit of magic.
