APPELS EN TEE

Appels en Tee is a heartfelt Afrikaans drama series deeply rooted in the textures of real South African life — where the roads are familiar, the hills are lush and green, and the rhythm of daily living feels instantly recognisable and is directed by Berdene Burger. The writers team includes Berdene Burger, Tina Kruger, and our multi-talented, Gita Fourie, and tells the story of two childhood friends, Lisa and Henriëtte, who are reunited after 27 years apart.

Their reunion stirs up dark secrets buried in their teenage years in the Langkloof, secrets that refuse to stay hidden when the De Klerk family loses their farm and Lisa opens her home — and her heart — by offering them refuge at her tea garden. The narrative weaves between the present day and the nostalgic world of the 1990s, exploring themes of friendship, survival, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

At its core, Appels en Tee is also a story about legacy and the ties between generations. It follows the lives of the next generation, particularly the touching and unconventional bond between Lisa’s son, Francois, and Henriëtte’s deaf daughter, Annie — portrayed by Bianca Langedyk, who at the time of filming was represented by Ice Kids and has since joined Ice Artistes. The series also features our very own Sibongile Mlambo in the powerful role of Bongiwe Nkosi.

One critic beautifully described Appels en Tee as a series that feels like “sunlight after a day of swimming in cold water” — a “nostalgic hug that warms you from the inside out.”

Catch Appels en Tee every Tuesday evening at 8pm on kykNET (DStv channel 144).
